Dão is one of the oldest established wine regions of Portugal, located just south of the famous Douro Valley. The mountanious region is home to Touriga Nacional, the principle variety of port wine. The region takes its name from the Dão river, a tributary of the larger Mondego river. The majority of the region`s vineyards are located alongside the Dão river.

Adega de Penalva do Castelo is a Dao winery revived by Abegoaria, the winemaking project of the Bio family. Originally from Alentejo, Ana and Manuel Bio have invested in Portugal’s wine heritage; modernising facilities, and revitalising wineries in historic wine regions. Penalva`s Dao is made using traditional grape varieties grown on the region’s rugged granitic terrain by local farmers in the district of Castendo. The protection of the Serra da Estrela and location at 500m altitude creates a generous microclimate and distinguished wines.

Tasting Notes
Made from a blend of Touriga Nacional, Jaen (the Portuguese name for the grape Mencia), Alfrocheiro and Tinta Roriz. Six months oak ageing gives subtle notes of vanilla and toast which combine with the juicy blackberry and cherry fruits.

Serve with BBQ lamb chops, cured meats or tomato based vegetarian dishes.
