About Protos Reserva
Protos 5º Año Reserva is a red wine from the DO Ribera del Duero produced by Bodegas Protos, one of the historic wineries of the appellation. Its name, meaning "first" in Greek, alludes to the pioneering status of a house founded in 1927 in Peñafiel and closely linked to the origins of the DO Ribera del Duero.
To craft this reserva, Protos selects Tinta del País from vineyards over 50 years old located in some of the most renowned municipalities of the region: Peñafiel, Pesquera de Duero, Anguix, and Roa. These plots are set on generally poor and infertile soils, with a loam or sandy-loam texture and the presence of limestone in certain areas. Planted on south-facing slopes and under a continental climate, these vines yield very low outputs, around 2,500 kg per hectare, producing grapes of great concentration and balance.
The harvest of Protos 5º Año Reserva is conducted manually in 20 kg boxes, and the grapes undergo a selection table before production begins. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature between 26 and 28 ºC, followed by a maceration of approximately 21 days with daily pump-overs. This precise work aims to extract structure and depth without losing the fruit's identity.
Time plays an essential role in the wine. Protos 5º Año Reserva spends at least 18 months in oak barrels, combining new French oak and one-year-old American barrels. It then continues to mature for 42 months in the bottle before being released to the market.
The result is a reserva that arrives in the glass with a lengthy ageing process behind it, yet still with potential ahead. A wine born from old vines, crafted with patience, and designed for those who appreciate Ribera del Duero when the fruit, wood, and time find their perfect balance.
